Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has commenced the Third Phase of Stakeholder Engagement for the Tamale–Damongo Water Supply Project with a fruitful engagement with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and Assembly Members of the West Gonja Municipal Assembly.
The engagement forms part of ongoing Community Engagement and Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) studies being undertaken ahead of the implementation of the project. The meeting provided an opportunity for the project team to brief the MCE and Assembly Members on the project, the RAP process, and the planned community-level engagements. It also allowed the Assembly to share its perspectives and prepare for the next stage of engagement with communities along the project corridor.
The meeting was described as fruitful, with stakeholders expressing their willingness to support the project and facilitate effective community entry and participation. The project team is expected to return to the West Gonja Municipality within the coming week to commence community entry activities and engage directly with residents and other stakeholders.
The community engagements will provide an opportunity for residents, landowners, farmers, property owners, women’s groups, youth groups, and other relevant stakeholders to receive information about the project, raise concerns, and provide relevant information to the project team. The engagements are also intended to support the identification of potential Project Affected Persons (PAPs) and the collection of relevant information for the ongoing RAP studies.
The Third Phase of the stakeholder engagement is expected to cover communities and project corridors within Tamale, Damongo, Busunu, Yapei and other areas associated with the transmission and distribution networks. GWL has encouraged residents and other stakeholders within the project-affected areas to actively participate in the scheduled engagements and cooperate with the survey and assessment teams.
The Company further reminds the public that 1st October 2026 has been established as the cut-off date for eligibility as Project Affected Persons (PAPs). Residents, landowners, property owners, farmers and other persons with interests within the project-affected areas are therefore encouraged to make themselves available when the project team visits their communities and properties. The Tamale–Damongo Water Supply Project is expected to significantly improve access to reliable potable water for Tamale, Damongo and communities along the project corridor.
The project involves the development of water infrastructure, including the abstraction and treatment of raw water from the White Volta at Yapei and transmission to beneficiary communities. Ghana Water Limited has emphasised that the cooperation and participation of affected communities remain essential to ensuring that the project is implemented in a fair, transparent and socially responsible manner.
