The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) is engaging the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to roll out a programme that will provide live coverage of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings across Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
The initiative is aimed at opening up local governance to citizens by strengthening transparency, accountability and public participation in decision-making at the grassroots.
It is also expected to deepen citizens’ understanding of the decentralisation process and give residents greater access to discussions and decisions that directly affect their communities.
The programme is being pursued in line with the objectives of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), which provides the framework for citizen participation in local governance.
Beyond improving public access to the proceedings of MMDAs, the initiative is expected to generate greater public interest in the upcoming District-Level Elections and encourage more citizens to participate actively in choosing and engaging their local representatives.
The initiative underscores the importance of bringing local governance closer to the people and ensuring that citizens are not merely recipients of development decisions but active participants in shaping them. With broader media coverage of Assembly proceedings, the NCCE and GBC hope to contribute to the development of more transparent, accountable and responsive local institutions across Ghana.
