Puozuing hands over books to GES, urges equitable distribution and teacher rationalisation
WA — The Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing, Esq., has donated 13,800 exercise books to the Ghana Education Service (GES) for distribution to deprived and underserved schools across the region’s 11 Municipal and District Assemblies.
The exercise books, presented through the Regional Coordinating Council ahead of the reopening of schools, will be shared equally among the assemblies, with each receiving 1,150 books.
At the handover ceremony, the Regional Minister directed district education directors to ensure that the materials reached communities and schools where the need was greatest.
He urged the education authorities to work closely with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to improve learning outcomes and ensure that support reached underserved communities.
While acknowledging progress in the region’s education sector, Hon. Puozuing identified the uneven distribution of teachers as a persistent challenge.
He noted that some districts were oversubscribed with teachers, while schools in hinterland communities continued to experience staffing shortages.
The Minister announced plans for staff rationalisation and appealed to newly posted teachers to embrace service in deprived communities before seeking transfers to municipal centres.
The donation forms part of a nationwide initiative themed “Educating Every Child, Strengthening Every Community,” which seeks to support basic education and community development.
Speaking on behalf of the initiative, the Upper West Regional Representative of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), Hon. Ninfaazuma Benedict, commended the intervention as a timely boost for learners in deprived areas.
