Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has charged the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to intensify preventive maintenance, system monitoring and emergency preparedness to safeguard the country’s electricity transmission network.
According to the Minister, a resilient transmission system is essential to complement Ghana’s efforts to expand generation capacity and strengthen national energy security.
Mr. Jinapor made the call when he joined the 13th Annual General Meeting of GRIDCo, where the company reviewed its operational and financial performance for 2025.
He commended the Board, Management and staff of GRIDCo for what he described as a strong performance, noting that the company transmitted a record 25,860 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity during the year and recorded a profit after tax of GH¢584.46 million.
The Minister also praised GRIDCo for achieving strong reliability and availability across its transmission network.
He particularly commended the company’s staff for their professionalism and response in restoring power following the Akosombo incident, saying the experience should provide important lessons for strengthening the resilience of the national grid.
Mr. Jinapor urged GRIDCo to ensure that every fault within the transmission system becomes an opportunity for improvement.
“Every fault must generate lessons, and every identified weakness must lead to corrective action,” he said.
He tasked the company to strengthen preventive maintenance, system monitoring, protection coordination and restoration preparedness, while embracing innovative technologies capable of improving the reliability and efficiency of the transmission network.
The Minister further assured GRIDCo of government’s continued support for critical investments aimed at expanding and strengthening the national transmission infrastructure.
Among the projects highlighted is the Eastern Corridor Transmission Backbone, which he said would form part of efforts to improve the resilience and reach of Ghana’s transmission system.
Mr. Jinapor stressed that investments in electricity generation must be matched by corresponding investments in transmission infrastructure.
“A stronger generation mix must be matched by a resilient transmission network,” he emphasised.
He said the government’s broader objective was to restore GRIDCo’s position as one of Africa’s most reliable, innovative and financially sustainable transmission utilities, while ensuring that Ghanaians receive dependable electricity services. The Minister’s remarks come as Ghana continues to pursue measures to improve energy security, reduce system vulnerabilities and build a more resilient electricity sector capable of supporting economic growth and industrial development.
