The Leukemia Project Foundation, for some time now in Ghana, has been creating awareness about the health condition.
Its sensitization exercise on last Sunday (7/11/2019) was based on artworks by members of some three selected schools.
“Leukemia is cancer of the body’s blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow and the lymphatic system. Many types of leukemia exist. Some forms of leukemia are more common in children. Other forms of leukemia occur mostly in adults.Leukemia usually involves white blood cells,” according to the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research.
At the event in Accra, artworks were shown by some students to educate the people about the condition and to let them know that it is not to be feared, but to be managed properly.
The occasion was used for fundraising as well.
The artists were in two categories; under 13 years, and under 19 years. They received various awards for their efforts.
The Vice President of the Foundation, Victor Osei Tutu said in future the Foundation was to build a Leukemia Center in Ghana to help the whole of sub-Saharan Africa.
The Head of Hematology Department, Korle-Bu, Dr. Yvonne Dei Adomakoh said the Foundation was helping some patients and had donated funds to the Department.
She reiterated that the event was an opportunity for the participants to express their thoughts about leukemia through artworks.
She said leukemia was not a “death sentence.”
And through awareness created by the Foundation, more people were informed about leukemia.
“It is amazing to know that more people now know about the condition.”
The Foundation was also running a counseling session for the patients.
